CNSAS Cave Diving Commission
The CNSAS, in its caving branch, relies on specialists that, as well as performing their statutory task of technical volunteers, are engaged in highly specialized activities aimed at ensuring sufficient resources, procedures and training in critical areas of underground rescue in hostile environments. In particular, the Cave Diving Commission (ComSub) operates in natural or artificial underwater cavities, completely flooded and generally confined waters and in flooded difficult access areas.
The commission was established in 1984 by cave divers during the fourth national meeting of the Speleological Section of the then CNSA (National Alpine Rescue Corps). Becomes operational with the first national drill in April 1985.
Technicians who are part of the technical rescue ComSub commission are cavers owning diving experience and high technical specialization and are present all over Italy. In the staff are included even some physicians.
They are all qualified in deep diving (altofondalisti) and operate with the most modern technologies including closed-circuit breathing systems (rebreathers), newly arrived in the world of recreational and technical diving. They are placed at the top in the field even on an international scale.
Particular attention is paid to the study and retrieval of equipment designed especially for use in extreme underwater environment and designed for their employement even beyond flooded cavities (syphons). Airtight containers, medical equipment and logistics, mobile and more are often designed, manufactured and / or adapted by ComSub itself. These technologies are not available on the market. The CNSAS Cave Diving School assures training, upgrading and standardization of all technical ComSub volunteers ensuring a high level of operativity shown in many cases in Italy (and abroad), often in collaboration with the Institutional Bodies of the Country.
The ComSub know how is also tested, along with equipment and procedures in national exercises that take place periodically throughout the national territory. Great attention is devoted to the prevention of caving accidents with lessons, presentations in conferences, publications, etc.
Lately, it has been established a deep collaboration with the Italian Civil Defence System who had allowed ComSub to be provided with a portable hyperbaric chamber while all the support logistic as porters, tents, generators, radios, etc. is already ensured by Alpine and Caving CNSAS Stations diffusely spread throughout the whole Country.
Commission coordinators from 1984 to now: Luciano Postogna, Carlo Rossetti, Alessio Fabricatore, Luigi Casati, Claudio Giudici, Raffaele Onorato, Marco Broglio (in office).
